I will start at the end. Diane – used appropriately sparingly this week – expressed it perfectly: “This whole line of thought is problematic!”

Our themes leading into sweeps are mob power plays, insanity, random acts of violence and sperm. Woo hoo.

With those things in mind, my view of the week was:

Men continued to physically threaten Carly and I still didn’t care (callously?)

Mobsters, insane and otherwise, postured and I still didn’t care (rationally?).

Carly expressed an inking of doubt over exposing her boys to mob life (temporary? almost certainly) and I laughed and had the words too little, too late swirling around in my head for ages.

Sam returned (what would they have done had Kelly Monaco not re-signed; permanent location shoot?).

Carly gave ongoing relationship “advice” to Jason and Lulu (hmm, what would she do if they actually ever put Jason and Lulu together?*).

Jason basically said “I don’t have time for teen relationship dramas at the moment!” (finally!)

Elizabeth and Lucky finally decided to show a little backbone in telling their lawyers to shut the hell up and let them work it out themselves (also, finally)!

Elizabeth was a hypocrite, Sam called her on it, and I had no sympathy for either of them (probably not what they’re aiming for).

Lulu was stupid again, and some more (inexplicably). Carly was stupider again, and some more (par for the course). Both of these things were mob-related (coincidence? I don’t think so).  Every second Lulu spends with or talking about Johnny makes me love Lulu/Logan more, and I really rather love them already.

Patrick finally got back the ability to show respect (overdue).

Robin’s ever-loving mind did not return. May have disappeared further in fact. Spinelli. It was only possible to watch because of Jason’s reactions including physically backing away from the madness. I thought he was going to find the butterfly net to catch her in and take her back to the mental ward. I get the Spinelli is smart thinking behind Robin’s choice, but everything that that choice inflicted on us was just too much, and that was even before he asked Jason to take his place because he couldn’t perform on demand.

Sonny showed greater insight into himself and his own failings than the rest of the characters (excluding Ric) combined, which still wasn’t nearly enough (momentary signs of old Sonny?). In fact, for all its many failings, this week may actually have represented Sonny’s/the show’s best dealing with him being bipolar since he was diagnosed. And nary a jazz hand was involved. On a related note, Ric the insane kettle continued to call Sonny the insane pot black without a hint of self-awareness.

Nikolas tried and failed to push Sam of a parapet and I found myself hoping this party does turn out like the Bacchanalia of old with lots of throwing people off parapets (I’m back to callous again, aren’t I?). A return of the Cassadines in proper form would be a great development and not just because of the parapet throwing.

All the stupidity and violence aside, I am looking forward to the sweeps outfits though. Those pretty dresses and tuxes should get me through at least the first two days, and then the tuxes with the jackets and ties discarded should be good for another couple of episodes.

* Not that I want that for even a second, but we know these damn writers so we’ve all thought it over the last year, let’s face it. And how would Carly cope? She’s genetically wired to hate every single one of their partners, so would she blow one off (I’d bet Lulu in a heartbeat) or would she embrace it? And if she embraced it, what would be her reason for living if not hating Jason’s girlfriends?

One Response to “General Hospital: Limping Around and Tripping Over Ass-Backwards into Sweeps”

  1. I am glad that at least one soap I watch is having a ball (literally). I remember when soaps used to trot out fancy dress occassions every three or four months; now GH is all about obliterating the town’s one hotel over and over again.
